LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a revolutionary aerial laser scanning technology which enables height data from the land to be captured quicker, accurately and cost effectively. Blom has been one of the world’s leading providers of LiDAR resources over the last ten years and we offer a full range of services and solutions, from consultancy and data capture through to data processing and digital models.
Data is captured by using lasers to measure the distance between the aircraft and the ground, this is completed by using pulses from the laser and timing the time it takes for the pulses to return to the plane. Every laser pulse from the aircraft can return up to four returning light signals that can penetrate vegetation and give accurate measurements of the ground.
The group operate both helicopter and fixed-wing LiDAR systems, this means that the LiDAR products we produce are extremely versatile. High accuracy datasets produced from the helicopter LiDAR system can be used for the high detailed mapping of road and rail routes while the fixed-wing system is cost effective enough to survey large areas of forestry. Blom can also offer LiDAR solutions both as contracted services for specific aerial surveying projects or pre captured areas that are part of Blom’s archive datasets.
Applications of LiDAR spread far and wide, traditionally LiDAR data is used for Civil engineering and flood modeling, recent technology development in the media and leisure industry has seen LiDAR now being used to create virtual realities and special effects.
